Jonathan Lapalme - Principal
Jonathan Lapalme is a serial social entrepreneur, strategic designer, systems thinker and media producer. With a master's degree in Design and Urban Ecologies from Parsons The New School for Design and a bachelor's degree in Cultural and Media Production from UQAM, Jonathan has been working for over 15 years on the design of processes and strategies related to various types of socio-ecological issues.
In recent years, he has co-founded/activated several organizations and initiatives, including Dark Matter Labs Canada, Nouveaux Voisins, l'Office des règles et des normes (ORN), LICER, Entremise, H-MTL/Memento, the Faculty of Ignorance and many others. He is currently focused on developing participatory futurism projects that blend participatory design, documentary filmmaking, foresight, and science fiction under the banner Les Interstices.
His first pilot project, Les Matérialistes, explores the future of the circular economy for construction materials. Launched in June 2024, this short film has since been screened at more than twenty film festivals worldwide and locally adopted by numerous sectors, communities, and municipalities as a tool for inspiration, mobilization, and collective transformation. He is currently producing and directing many more similar practical utopias exploring the futures of democracy, solidarity finance, Indigenous governance and aging, among others.
His work has earned several awards at international film festivals since 2024. He was also named one of Montreal’s visionaries to watch by the McCord Museum in 2017, as well as Urbania magazine and Concordia University's The Institute for Urban Futures in 2016. His first short documentary, Uneven Growth NY, was shown for six months at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
